Application of Biotechnology in Conservation of Agricultural Plant Genetic Resources in Vietnam
In Vietnam, agricultural plant genetic resources (APGR) are conserved in the national conservation network of for which Plant Resources Center is coordinator of the network. The main activities of APGR conservation are: surveying, collection, maintaining characterization, evaluation, documentation and utilization of genetic resources. There are 28,000 germplasms which are maintained in ex situ conservation; among them approximately 80%, 10% and 5% of the accessions have been characterized and evaluated at the phenotype and genotype levels, respectively. Annually; about 1,000 genetic accessions have been provided for utilization. At present, 400 genetic accessions have been maintained in the invitro genebank in Plant Resources Center. The protocols for slow growth culture have been developed for invitro conservation. Analysis genetic diversity of luffa, rice, rice bean... was conducted. Gene mapping has been carried out on rice in order to identify the genes resistance to biotic and abiotic factors. In the future, application of biotechnology in APGR conservation will focus on: using of invitro conservation for lager number of APGR; developing standard procedures for slow growth culture in invitro conservation of APGR; using of cryopreservation for some crops; using of molecular techniques to analyze: genetic diversity, genomic function, gene mapping and gene cloning of APGR; particularly for local varieties.
