Application of Marker Assisted Selection to select the individual plants carrying QTL/gen (increase grains per panicle) in the F2 and F3 populations from the crossed donor and recipient parents to improve rice yield potential
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the leading worldwide food crops and is the main food source of nearly 90 million people in Vietnam. However, the high pressure of rapid population growth, and cultivated areas of rice are reduced due to the urbanization and industrialization. Moreover, rice production is being adversely influenced by the negative effects of climate change. Hence, to improve rice yield with high quality is an urgent task. The objective of this study was to apply molecular breeding, marker assisted selection (MAS) to select the individual plants carrying QTL/gene (increase grains per panicle) in F2 and F3 populations. Using three SSR markers, namely RM445, RM500 and RM21615 which are tightly linked with the QTL/gene to screen the F2 and F3 populations. In F2 population, combining two molecular markers RM21615 and RM500, 10 individual plants carrying QTL/gene increase grains per panicle were selected. Similarly, in F3 population, RM445, RM500 markers were used to select 8/139 individual plants with heterozygous and 1/139 individual with homozygous at the target locus of the two markers. The ongoing work is continuously selfing to select the stable plants with high yield potential.
