Pumpkin production Potential and Challenges
Recently, production development of pumpkin genetic resources in Viet Nam is still small and fragmentary. It mainly depends on farmers' spontaneous in giving out pumpkin production making decision. In fact, Pumpkin and its products are being highly appreciated in agricultural production system and consumption requirement in central markets in Ha Noi city, Vinh Phuc and Hai Duong provinces. Therefore, need of proper analysis about potential and challenges of pumkin production based on aspects of production areas, economical efficiency and market is necessary to avoid freely and un-planned planting. The research results showed that pumpkin production areas at study sites are gradually increased in passed years, especially in specializing vegetable cultivation zones and intercropping models between pumpkin and perennial plants such as apple, guava.. as well as low land areas; the market potential of pumpkin products is very high, esspecially pumpkin leaves, bud which is considered as safety vegetables for consumers in central cities; And, pumpkin cultivation could achieve higher economical efficiency than some other upland crops due to its advantages in saving production expenses such as low investment in labour, soild preparation and weed cleaning.
