Analysis of the sugar content in the straw of Vietnam rice varieties for biofuel production
Energy plays an essential role for economic and social development and improvement the quality of our life. Bioenergy is making significant progress in order to reduce dependence on oil. Rice is most important crop in Vietnam, with about 4 million hectares of rice and annual straw discharge volume is up to 50 million tons. With these large quantities of straw, it is possible to produce million tons of ethanol. This study was to evaluate the ability to convert sugar from straw of Vietnam rice varieties that can be useful for biofuel production. A total of 119 straw samples of rice varieties were collected and analyzed on the sugar content in the straw. The results determined that the sugar content of the samples ranged from 23.27 nmol/mg to 72.78 nmol/mg. The varietal samples that have high sugar content are Tamdu (54.18 nmol/mg), Q5 (56.10 nmol/mg), BC15 (57.82 nmol/mg), TL6 (63.25 nmol/mg), U17 (72.78 nmol/mg). The straw of these rice varieties are perfectly capable of being used to produce biofuels in Vietnam.
