Evaluation and development on salinity-toleranted sweet potato germplasm for saline infected land areas in Hau Loc, Thanh Hoa
The negative impact of storm No 7 in 2005 caused an saline infected agricultural large land areas in Hau Loc district, Thanh Hoa province. This requires synchronous solutions for agriculture development study and planning in the future. One of mentioned solutions is to diversify plants and increase efficiency of land use. Use of appropriate and climatic proofed plant varieties is one of active, efficient and low cost methods. It will become true to have crops adapted to salinity, used for multi- purposes and accustomed to production practice by local farmers. Sweet potato crop is one of crops cultivated for a long time by farmers in delta and coastal areas in Vietnam. The results of primary experiments in Lab showed that there are 6 sweet potato varieties tolerated to salinity environment (0,5-1%) but only 2 sweet potato varieties selected after trial experiments in field and measured the salinity concentration in land is 0,16-0,22%. However, need of more time and budget to continue research and broaden the production of these sweet potato varieties.
