Research on application of USBF (Upflow Sludge Blanket Filtration) technology for treatment of leachate from landfill

Abstract

A new biological treatment technique of wastewater, which has been wide spreed nowadays in the world, it called the Upflow Sludge Blanket Filtration (USBF). This technology is modified and based on activated sludge process and process of upflow sludge blanket filtration (USBF). This AO-USBF process comprises the biological degradations of anoxic and aerobic condition in AO compartments, and the filtration and biological degradation within sludge blanket. With this technology, the treated wastewater is filtrated by sludge blanket without the secondary sedimentation tank as the ordinary activated sludge process. The research results showed that the application of USBF technology for treatment of landfill leachate gained good removal of pollutants in leachate. The removal efficiencies of COD, TN, TP, NH4 + and BOD5 can reach 86,7%, 42,91%, 41,19%, 39,89% and 87,72%, respectively. This could be concluded that the AO-USBF can be used as one of effective and economic technologies for treatment of landfill leachate in future.
