Research to select soybean and groundnut varieties for intercropping woth sugarcane in Thanh Hoa province
Thanh Hoa is one of the provinces that possess the largest area for sugarcane cultivation and highest sugarcane productivity of the whole country. In the recent past years, the situation of pest and disease damages to sugarcane and the soil degradation are becoming more and more seriously on sugarcane - material cultivation areas of the province. Thousand hectars of soils for sugarcane - material cultivation have been transferred to cultivation of other crops. Sugarcane productivity tends to be slowly increased. From the in-country and oversea research results, it is shown that intercropping sugarcane with legume family crop plants is the important solution for sugarcane intensive cultivation and is the compulsory solution for sustainable sugarcane farming. The soybean variety DT26, which has been selected, is of good growth and development, yield from 10.5 - 11.0 quintals/ha on hilly soils and from 11.5 - 12.2 quintals/ha on field soils. This variety is suitable for inter-cropping with sugarcane on both hilly and field soils. And L26 is a compact shaped, good growth and development groundnut variety, yield from 18.5 to 19.6 quintals/ha, suitable for intercropping on field soil on Thach Thanh district, Thanh Hoa province.
