Study on integrated control of tomato insect pests in Lam Dong Province
Due to the shortage of effective integrated management, tomato producers in Lam Dong province have to rely on chemical pesticides to control insect pests. Our recent research findings showed that it can be applied integrated prevention measures including: (i) field sanitation before planting and during growing in combination with shoots cutting; (ii). covering soil with grey - silver color plastic or hanging silver foil on the top of plant to prevent insects; (iii). using some effective bio and botanical pesticides as Delfin, Neem nim green oval green, Sokupi; (iv). using high effective chemical pesticides such as Sword, Oshin, Actara, winner Map etc. when pests occures at high density. Under the pressure of pesticide use, the density of natural enemies on tomato in Lam Dong is severally recorded, so their role to control insect pests was not clearly recognized. However, research has found tobacco mirid bug N. tenuis as a common insect but causing no significant damage to tomato. As a polyphagous insect, N. tenuis showed high potentiality to use a large number of larvae and pupae of tobacco whitefly for food. Therefore, it needs to be protected and ultilized as promissing bio- agent. The demonstration of IPM showed high effective to control tomato insect pests, reduction of pesticide application (2 times/ crop season), significant reduction of cost related to pesticide use and increase of net benifit from 18.30 to 28.98% compared to farmer practice
