Research on coffee water saving irrigation and fertigation techniques in the Central Highlands of Vietnam
Recently, coffee producers in the Central Highlands of Vietnam have been facing a big problem in dry seasons: lacking of water for irrigation. This is related to issues of over irrigated water amount practiced by farmers and due to climate change impact. To solve this problem, our research, started in 2011, focuses on water saving irrigation and fertigation techniques for coffee in Vietnam. The results show that with our water saving irrigation system, coffee trees development situation, flowers blooming rate and yield have not been affected statistically when reducing 20% of water and 20% of fertilizers. Moreover, with this reduction in labors and fertilizers costs, the economic benefit per hectare can be increased nearly 16 million VND comparing to that of the current cultivated system. This system can be hopefully a solution for a sustainable production of coffee not only in the Central Highlands but also for all coffee producers in Vietnam.
