Transfer of new Vietnamese rice varieties in rice production in Brunei

- Brunei is a country in Southeast Asia, has rice land area of 1,304 ha. In 2012, Brunei’s rice production obtained about 2,701 tons rice and equal with milled rice volume of 1,756 tons, only to achieve 5.06% of food self-sufficiency. Vietnam and Brunei agreed to implement the project on “Co-operation in rice production development in Brunei Darussalam” from September, 2013 - January, 2014 to increase rice production and ensure the Brunei’s national food security. - There were 10 Vietnamese rice varieties and one local rice variety Laila used in the rice varietal test in Brunei. The result of the study showed that all Vietnamese rice varieties obtained yield above 3.3 t/ha and took advantage of 27 to 90 % over the local check rice variety Laila; two rice varieties such as OM6161 and OM7347 were evaluated best in the field performance and sensory test by Bruneian staffs and farmers and these rice varieties should be widely introduced in Brunei.
