New Maize Hybrids Tolerant to acid sulphate soils with High Grain Yield for Cuu Long river delta
Cuu Long river delta is one of the two largest zones of acid sulphate soils and is also one of the highest yielding maize growing regions among maize planting regions across Vietnam. In order to take the most advantageous conditions of the region, it is highly necessary to develop high grain yield maize hybrids which are highly tolerant to acid sulphate soils. Results of testing 51 promising maize hybrids in 3 years (2008, 2009, 2010) across 2 regions with average pH of 4.7 - 5.5 at Tan Chau - An Giang province and Hong Ngu - Dong Thap province showed that two maize hybrids (LVN146 and F486) having average yield of 10 tones per hectare, tolerant to acid sulphate soils conditions. These tow hybrids are also met many requirements of local farmers in terms of agronomic traits. Therefore, there should be more variety national testing sites and more demonstrations in farmer fields conditions.
