Results on research and breeding of drought tolerant rice varieties for water - deficit lands

Abstract

Vietnam is considered as one of the countries severely affected by climate change. The area of arable land and paddy rice in water - defecit lands of the country account for about 1.3 million ha. The drought - tolerant rice varieties are few in number and type, and of long growth duration, low yield (1.0 - 1.2 tons/ha) and less stable. Therefore, the selection and application of high yielding and good quality rice varieties, resistant to drought, diseases and of wide adaptability to the water difficult lands are of important and urgent tasks. CH16 and LCH37 have been bred and selected by the Field Crops Research Institute. These new drought - tolerant rice varieties will meet the target, as well as the requirements of production in the disadvantaged areas of the country. CH16 and LCH37 are of good drought tolerant ability, quick recovery from drought, short - growth duration, high - yield and stability. CH16 and LCH37 yield from 5.5 - 6.0 tons/ha in water deficit conditions and 3.5 - 4.0 tons/ha in completely rain - fed cultivation conditions with rather good quality. CH16 and LCH37 are mildly infected with blast, sheath blight and, recently infected with pests in field conditions. CH16 and LCH37 are of wide adaptability, suitable cultivated land in water deficit areas in the Northern Mountainous Provinces, the Central and the Highland.
