Research result in selection and test of aroma rice variety Gia Loc 159

Recently, demand for high quality of aroma rice market in the Red River Delta has been increasing rapidly. In order to meet this demand, short growth duration of rice variety have fragrant kernel, aroma and soft after being cooked. The Field Crops Research Institute has successfully developed a new rice variety Gia Loc 159 from cross combination of HT1/OM2395//KD18 by using traditional selection method combined with artificial purification for insect resistance tolerant trait. Gia Loc 159 has vigor stem and leaf, high tiller number (6-7tillers), long panicle (24-26cm), high grain per panicle (220- 250 grains). Gia Loc 159 has 17.5% of amylose content and 6.0-7.0 tons/ha for average yield (in Spring) and 5.5-6.0 tons/ha (in summer). In the Red River Delta, Gia Loc 159 is sold at the same price with rice varieties BT7 (one of the most favorite rice in the RRD). Gia Loc 159 variety has good field uniform. It was introduced to multi agronomy ecological zones in the RRD. It is reported that Gia Loc 159 is one of the promising rice varieties which can participate in cropping system and contribute to improve rice quality in the RRD.
