Results of breeding hybrid cucumber variety GL1-2
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is a major vegetable crop in Vietnam with rapidly expanded production scale in recent years. Cucumber cultivation is not only significant in employment creation to increase household income for farmer but also contributes to economic development of the country. Some thousand tons of cucumber are exported annually bringing remarkable foreign currency. Understanding the demand of production for high yielding improved cucumber variety, Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute has conducted a cucumber breeding project ‘Hybrid cucumber breeding for domestic production and export in North of Vietnam’ in 2011-2015 period to relieve the dependence on imported seed, reduce production cost and enhance production efficiency. Using hybid F1 imported varieties as crossing material and through common breeding method, some promising hybrid varieties for fresh market have been discovered in 2011. Among those, the new promising variety GL1-2 has been developed with good characteristics: (1) 80-85 day growing duration, (2) vigorous growth and development, (3) affected by Pseudoperonospora cubensis BC at very light level, (4) 50-60 tons ha-1 yielding, (5) green fruit, white needle and thick flesh.
