Results of testing the submerged rice variety Khang Dan 18-Sub1 in Northern Vietnam
Vietnam is one of the most vulnerable countries affected by submergence stress in Asia. Submergence caused by typhoons and floods is one of the major reasons for rice production losses in this country. Improving rice tolerance with submergence is vital to minimize the risks from submergence stress. Using marker-assisted backcrossing (MABC) method to successfully transferred positive alleles of Sub1 from PSB-Rc68 into Khang Dan18. In this study, we reported a result of testing SHPT2 (Khang dan 18-Sub1) for agronomic, yield component traits at several provinces. SHPT2 has some good characters such as: short duration (less than 110 days), high yield (6,3 tons/ha in spring season). This variety also expressed resistance to some major pests and diseases in the field, such as brown plant hopper, blast, sheath blight, steam borer, and bacterial blight. Especially, results obtained from the experiments conducted in 2014 showed that SHPT2 could become a new rice variety with submergence tolerance, and replace original Khang Dan 18 variety.
