The groundnut is an important field crop in dry land areas in Vietnam. During the last ten years (2005 - 2014), the national pod yield of groundnut has been increased significantly from 1.8 to 2.14 tons ha-1 . Expanding production area under advanced technologies, of which, applying new high - yielding variety, was considered the main reason. The objective of this paper is to describe the process of breeding for new groundnut variety that is better in pod yield, more tolerant to main leaf diseases and leaf feeders to replace the popular variety L14. The new variety named L27 has been developed by Legume Research and Development Center - Field Crops Research Institutue. The variety derived from cross between L18, a highest yielding variety and morderately resistant to main leaf diseases, leaf feeders and drought tolerant and L16, a variety with thin shell, big seed size. L27 belongs to Spanish type, dark and thick leaf, medium to big pod and seed size; shelling percentage 70 - 73%; 53.1% in oil content; tan in seed coast color, morderately resistant to main leaf diseases, leaf feeders and drought tolerant. In the national multi location yield test, it was 24.0% and 18.5% dry pod yield higher than check variety L14 in Spring and Autumn - Winter season respectivery. The pod yield harvested of L27 in demonstration fields in Ha Tinh and Vinh Phuc provinces in Spring season of 2013 - 2014 was higher (24.7 - 29.0%) as compared to the check varieties (L14). L27 has been recorgnized for the National Large - scale Production Test and property licenced by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development under decision No. 46/QĐ-TT-CCN dated 26/2/2014 for the northern provinces and decision No. 629/QĐ-TT-VPBH dated 31/12/2013 respectively.
