Status and solutions for Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott production development in Northern mountainous region
The research and evaluation of the production status and consumption of taro crop in Phu Tho, Bac Kan, Hoa Binh, Yen Bai provinces in 2010-2013 showed that the production of taro in the Northern mountainous areas is small, fragmented, self developed and not proportional to the potential value of this specy. Beside the advantages of land resource for production, labor, product quality and consumers’ tastes, there are some disadvantages, of which, it is neccesary to mention as breeding resource, post harvest preservation ability and the linkages among related parties in the commodity chain. In order to sustainably develop the taro production to make the northern area into a great production area, to improve livelyhood for people in the Northern mountainous region, the key solutions are: proper planning, selection of appropriate technologies (propagation, preserving, processing) and setting up proper connection between the farmers and businesses.
