Current status of water supply system and environment management for catfish culture in Me Kong Delta Provinces of Vietnam
A recent study conducted by the Institute for Agricultural Environment showed that although the catfish industry is booming in the Me Kong Delta, the water supply system in two major culture areas surveyed as An Giang and Dong Thap has not been constructed separately with water irrigation system for crop production. Though these provinces have planned irrigation system for aquaculture, it is not in time to meet the development of the fishery culture. Almost fish culture farmers did not apply waste water treatment and spend enough land for sludge disposal. Except the partly use of waste water for rice irrigation, the rest is poured directly or indirectly through sharing canals of cooperatives into the main river. The household wastewater is under management because there is no separate supply and drainage system for water in and out. Most farmers do not have a settling pond, untreated water before it enters the pond. This is the main cause to make water polluted, thereby causing disease outbreaks in the pond.
