Research results on selection and trial testing of drought-resistant rice variety LCH37 in Northern, Central and Western highland provinces
Climate change has a great impact on the crop production and is of pressing issue for Vietnam agriculture. Climate change is causing drought, salinity to crops, especially to rice. Therefore, to enhance and stabilize rice yields in drought conditions, in order to minimize losses caused by drought, the selection to create improved varieties that are of drought tolerance ability has become one of the current urgent problems. Drought tolerant rice variety LCH37 was bred to meet the research purpose and requirements of actual production. LCH37 is a short duration cultivar with growth duration of 103-105 days in summer crop, and 132-138 days in spring crop. LCH37 has fairly good drought tolerance (point1-3), suitable for areas not fully actively irrigated (irrigation insecurity). LCH37 give stable and high yield. In condition of insecured irrigation, its yield reached 50-60 quintals/ha, in the intensive farming area, yield reached 65-70 quintals/ha. Cultivar LCH37 is of rather good resistance to some major pests and diseases, decent quality, white rice, the amylose content of 16.4%, protein 9.2%. Cooked rice is soft, delicous and lightly fragrant. LCH37 has been undergone through basical testing and production testing in 4 crop production seasons at National Testing network in the Northern provinces, the Central and the Western Highlands. LCH37 has been asessed of being as a promising high quality rice cultivar over 3 basical and production trials by Center for seeds and crop products testing in the Central region and Central highland and proposed to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to recognize as a cultivar for trial production.
